Featured UNITED Artist: Kavir Mootoo

Kavir Mootoo

Mootoo states that 10 years ago, he began fine-art practice again (with Linocut Printmaking) after about 20 years. He started by printing Christmas cards and made his way up in size. He moved from printing on paper to printing on T-shirts shirts which evolved as a pathway to create clothing.

Mootoo states:

“This lead to doing my art T-shirts alone which I’ve been doing for 3 years and which I continue to do. I like making art on a medium that can be appreciated by many people as is the case with clothing. I then began painting on canvas after being given a couple canvasses by a friend. Thus has been interesting as I have new parameters with which to work.”

In terms of his Linos, T-shirts and clothing and canvases he values most working in a way where he follows his feelings, intuition and thoughts and allows his work to evolve. He has never had a preconceived idea of what a piece of artwork will look like.

He states, “I enjoy this way of working because I find it satisfying being in touch with real, deep parts of myself which I can’t/don’t process consciously with words and ideas. It’s an interesting situation because a painting is taken in visually by observers and I feel I’m presenting a language that is new to me. Presenting a non-representational image (of an object) is interesting to me and more so one that is lead by my feelings.”
