Over the past two weeks, Artists Fitzroy and Safiya Hoyte have worked consistently to create an outdoor mosaic basin at their home residence.
The mural depicts a series of hands encircling the body of the basin, naturalistic elements such as- hills, roots, trees, branches, the sky, sun, and moon.
The various visual motifs created through various tile size, shape, texture, and colors emphasize the underlying correlation between man and his environment. In order to change and preserve, we must do our part both the older and younger generations its a collective initiative
The piece essentially is the kickstart of the THINKGREEN initiative which focuses on creative works that are constructed from recycled materials. We invite everyone in Trinidad and by extension the world at large to “Think Green” as we strive to raise awareness and in turn reduce the amount of waste which we emit as a nation.
The project consists of a plethora of artistic, interactive, and intellectual based projects to bring awareness to the importance of environmental preservation and protection. In accordance with the aim to create a space, we aim to achieve this through a series of various activities and workshops whereby the by-products, in turn, would be used to establish a cohesive environmentally friendly space.
The tiles utilized for the project consisted of handcrafted squared generously donated by local ceramist Bunty O’Connor in addition to recycled tiles from previous household projects. The mosaiced basin is a functional piece and can be used to create a small scale aquatic pond for aquatic life and plants.
